Description
I came to Pola Beach with high hopes. We made the long, slow pre-dawn drive across much of the island, up and over the mountain, and then hiked in through the dark to reach the beach in time for sunrise. The hike itself was fun, though there were a shocking number of crabs and frogs on the trail and we had to be careful not to step on anything.
We had been here the day before to check out the scene, and I knew the tide would be coming in, but I was not ready for what I found that morning. The storms had pushed in a massive high tide, and the beach was far less forgiving than I had expected. I was only able to duck out for a brief moment to make this image before the water made it clear it was time to back off.
What I like most about this photograph is the mood. The soft blur of the ocean adds feeling and movement, while the heavy storm clouds and the steep, jagged cliffs give the scene a darker edge. The lush green landscape rising out of the black volcanic shoreline felt wild and dramatic in person, and that is exactly what I wanted this image to hold onto.
