Description
The Scenic Drive is a must-do for any trip to Capitol Reef. It offers almost 8 miles of paved roads and another 6 miles of dirt roads, leading you to some awe-inspiring locations in the park. The Reef and Waterpocket Fold present a unique challenge to photographers. While massive and majestic, finding the right locations with the right conditions is a real challenge.
After exploring for a few days, I found this stunning vantage point. I had to climb up a bit from the canyon to gain some elevation, but it shows a number of great features of the park. The Scenic Drive itself runs through the middle of the frame, and in the distance, you can see the Moenkopi Formations, the Waterpocket Fold, and the layers of sedimentary rock of the Colorado Plateau.
I set up so the sun would set on the far left of the image, hoping to capture the wonderful soft and reflected light on the red sandstone. Just enough clouds hung around through sunset to give color and interest to the sky, enhancing the dramatic landscape.
