Description
To truly experience Congaree National Park, you have to venture off the short 4-mile boardwalk and hike deep into the woods. The best views are hidden away from many of the casual visitors. I spent a few hours trudging through the mud, searching and waiting for the right light and scene. I found this little grove of swamp tupelos rising up from the middle of the lake. The water was still and calm, and the light was just peeking through the clouds, enough to make the moss on the side of the tree glow. The branches crisscrossing the photo add to the chaotic feeling you get deep in the backwoods of this South Carolina park.
