Description
I made this image just off Route 72 on Oahu, near Makapuʻu Lookout, after a night of storms. It was still raining on and off when I arrived in the early morning, and the whole coast had a darker, moodier feeling than the bright tropical scenes people often associate with Hawaii. I set up my camera looking out over the ocean toward Kaohikaipu Island, hoping the storm clouds and first light of morning would come together into something different.
The conditions ended up being exactly what I was looking for. The low clouds held the scene in soft blue light, while the long exposure blurred the water and gave the ocean a sense of motion without making it feel chaotic. The island, the rain, and the moving surf all worked together to create a quiet but powerful coastal image not the postcard version of Hawaii, but one that felt much closer to the morning I was actually standing in.
