Description
I have photographed sunset from Dead Horse Point many times over the years – probably a dozen by now and it is never quite the same twice. Some evenings build into something spectacular, while others begin with promise and quietly fade into darkness. Even so, the sheer scale of this landscape makes every visit worthwhile. The size of the canyon, the distance to the horizon, and the Colorado River winding far below give this place a presence that is hard to match anywhere else in the Southwest.
Over time, I have found a spot here that I especially like, a little farther from where most people gather for sunset. On this evening, the wind was a real problem, strong enough that events in town were being canceled, but the conditions also brought the kind of sky that makes the effort worth it. Light broke through in scattered patches across the sandstone, the Colorado River picked up a soft glow below, and the clouds overhead caught the last warm color of the day.
Storms Passing Over Dead Horse Point is a time-blended photograph, combining the best moments of the sunset into a single image that better reflects the experience of standing there. Rather than a literal split second, it captures the feeling of the evening the shifting light, the dramatic sky, and the immense, rugged beauty of this iconic Utah landscape.
