Description

Manzanita Lake is situated near one of the park’s main entrances, making it easily accessible. It was created when a rock avalanche from the northwest slope of Chaos Crags dammed Manzanita Creek about 300 years ago. The area features a campground, camp store, museum, and ranger station, but its most captivating feature is the breathtaking view of Lassen Peak.

A gentle walking trail encircles the lake, offering serene views from every angle. My daughter and I walked this trail several times, seeking the perfect spot to capture its beauty. Our first two visits were hampered by dull skies, but on our third attempt, we were rewarded with a spectacular sunset. The final image captures the last light of day illuminating the mountain and treetops, with a stunning array of colors filling the sky.

The calm and tranquil scene in this photograph contrasts with the lake’s turbulent volcanic past. The landscape you see today was shaped by lava, fire, and destruction, creating a beautiful and unique place to explore.

Scenic view of Manzanita Lake at sunset with a backdrop of Lassen Peak, showcasing vibrant clouds and the last light illuminating the mountain and treetops. The tranquil lake reflects its volcanic origins, with an easy walking trail encircling the water, capturing the natural beauty of the landscape.
