Capturing the majesty of a sunrise atop the East Maui Volcano in Haleakalā National Park is no easy task, but this panoramic image, composed of over 16 shots and nearly 400 megapixels, attempts just that. With the sun already above the horizon yet still below the clouds, the sky glows with an intense yellow while the warm blue hour light spreads across the crater below. From my vantage point, the descent to the crater floor is nearly 2,500 feet, offering a striking view of the long-dormant cinder cone volcanoes scattered across the landscape.
To find the best location for sunrise, I explored the area the afternoon before, and the next morning I returned two hours before dawn to secure this spot. At over 10,000 feet, you’re often above the clouds, and this August morning was no exception. Watching the sun rise through the clouds to illuminate the cinder cone volcanoes was a breathtaking adventure.
I ventured up the mountain several mornings in a row to ensure I captured the perfect shot, and I was fortunate to witness something this remarkable.
