Description

Death Valley gets around 2 inches of rain in an average year. I had the good fortune of being here in early January where we had rain for three days straight. The rain (while a blessing) transforms the park and new and interesting opportunities for photography emerge. However, this means you have to spend even more time scouting and exploring the seldom visited areas of the park.

I saw from the road what I thought was a waterway in the distance. I parked and hiked a fair bit over some rough ground to come across this stream that had formed from the recent rain. I found an area that was free of footprints and used the river as a leading line into the mountains in the distance. I was lucky to be there as the sun went behind the last cloud, rays of light came down into the valley and lit up the haze and dust.

A creek had formed in Death Valley from the recent rain. The photo shows the creek leading into the mountains with dotted light breaking through the clouds.
