Description
Sandstone Falls spans over 1,500 feet and divides the river into a series of islands. The falls drop 10 to 25 feet, making them the largest and most unique falls anywhere on the New River. Despite their remote location, the drive to get to the falls is very scenic, albeit long. We explored the falls multiple times, and while stunning, the size, scale, and limited access proved challenging for creating a unique photo.
I returned one last time during a storm at the end of the day. The parking lot and trail were almost empty. I headed out to this location I had scouted the day before. I set up my camera in the rain, hoping the sky would provide some drama. The clouds and rain made creating an interesting foreground easy, with the water running through the scene balanced by the brilliance of the fall colors. Just as I was about to give up, minutes after sunset, the clouds in the distance parted just enough to create the wonderful drama you see.
