Description
Early on a late June morning, I found myself alone in the usually active Rock Harbor Marina. The long northern days meant the sun rose early, but I was out even earlier, hoping to catch a dramatic sunrise. As I wandered the area looking for a composition, a heavy fog began to drift in about 30 minutes before first light.
Instead of chasing color, I shifted focus to capturing the mood of this remote northern wilderness. I composed the image with the dock leading the eye out across the still, glassy water of the harbor. Beneath the surface, the rocks are clearly visible, while across the way, a stand of white spruce and balsam fir rises like a wall of shadows in the mist. The trees fade gradually into the dense fog beyond, evoking a feeling of mystery and solitude that defines the spirit of Isle Royale.
