Description
My favorite way to photograph Thor’s Well is usually from close up, almost right in front of it. But on this evening, the tide was coming in, and getting that close would not have just been unwise — it likely would have been dangerous.
Instead, I worked from higher up on the bluffs, looking down across the lava rock and crashing surf. There were not many clouds in the sky, but right at sunset the horizon turned a deep golden yellow. From this safer vantage point, I was able to capture Thor’s Well doing what makes it so dramatic: shooting water high into the air while the Pacific Ocean rushed and churned all around it.
