Description
Before first light, we hiked down in total darkness to Thunder Rock Cove—also known as Seal Cove—in the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. The day before, we had scouted several trails leading to this remarkable area, which includes a natural bridge, hidden beaches, sea caves, and towering sea stacks. We chose this spot knowing it offered a sweeping view of the rugged Oregon coastline.
Facing south along the coast, I set up my camera just before dawn. The sun would rise behind us, and as clouds began to drift in overhead, I hoped they would catch some of the early color. They did.
This is a composite image, made from multiple exposures captured before and during sunrise. The early frames soften the motion of the water with long exposures, while the later frames highlight the pastel tones that spread across the sky. It’s a moment of calm and color—a reward for the effort it took to reach it.
