Description

This is a massive 400-megapixel panorama of the La Sal Mountains, taken late in the afternoon from Dead Horse Point State Park. The low sun brought warm light into the red rock landscape, while deep shadows stretched across the canyon walls and desert basin below. In the distance, the snow-covered La Sal Mountains rise above the desert, creating a striking contrast between the warm sandstone and the cold winter peaks.

This is one of those images where the online version can only tell part of the story. At full size, the panorama holds an incredible amount of detail, from the cliffs and mesas in the foreground to the mine in the basin and the mountain ridges far beyond. The wide format gives the scene the scale it deserves and captures the feeling of standing at Dead Horse Point with the whole Moab landscape opening up in front of you.
