Description
Clouds had been moving through the late afternoon sky for hours, changing the light across the desert basin below Dead Horse Point. I waited until the sun was low enough to bring out the shape of the landscape, while the clouds still hung over the La Sal Mountains in the distance. That mix of low light, shadow, and snow-covered mountains is what made the scene come together.
From this vantage point in Dead Horse Point State Park, the desert opens up in layers. The shadows give depth to the basin below, the famous potash mine can be seen in the midground, and the eye is pulled beyond the red rock landscape toward the La Sal Mountains. Taken in late winter, the contrast between the warm desert and the snow-covered peaks gives the image a wider sense of place not just the overlook itself, but the larger landscape around Moab.
