Description
Dead Horse Point is always stunning, but I came back here for a few days in a row looking for the right mix of light, clouds, and conditions. The overlook is one of those places where the scale is hard to take in all at once. The canyon stretches out in every direction, the Colorado River snakes through the scene below, and the changing light constantly reshapes the landscape.
In this image, the sun was still just above the horizon, casting warm light across the canyon and making the distant desert almost appear to glow. The shadows were starting to stretch, but there was still enough light to hold detail throughout the scene. That balance between warm sunset color and the darker canyon layers is what drew me to this moment.
What I love most here is the sense of scale. The river gives the eye a path through the foreground, while the cliffs, mesas, clouds, and warm light carry the view far into the distance. It is a big western landscape, and this photograph tries to hold onto that feeling of standing at the edge of the canyon as the day begins to fade.
