Description
Waiting for this sunrise, I was full of excitement and anxiety. My camera and tripod were set up well before any light appeared in the sky. It was hard to tell if the clouds I could just make out would stay around long enough to develop any color.
I hiked across the open desert to make the dunes the star of this photo. From most areas around here, you will also get the massive Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range in the photo. The passing storm clouds turned red in the morning light, and there was just enough of a break to allow the soft morning light to fall onto the top of the dunes.
For a sense of scale, these dunes can rise 750 feet from the floor of the San Luis Valley. They cover an area of 30 square miles and contain over 1.2 cubic miles of sand, making them the tallest dunes in North America.
