Description
Hickman Natural Bridge is an amazing hike and location in Capitol Reef National Park. The trailhead is only 2 miles from the main visitor center. The hike is truly stunning, with an amazing array of sights along the way, from lush valleys full of life to huge water pockets carved out of rock. The bridge or natural arch is just the icing on the cake at the end of a long hike.
The typical shot here is at sunrise, with the sun rising just over one of the domes in the far distance. I wanted to do something different, so I hiked up here long before sunset. I knew I would not have direct light, but the clouds from the earlier thunderstorms were breaking up and might turn into wonderful colors. I climbed over to the far side of the arch to get the huge boulders in the lower foreground and make the arch and the valley the stars of the image. I was lucky that as the sun started to set, the clouds did light up, completing this amazing photograph.
