Description

The Saguaro cactus is the iconic symbol of the American Southwest and the Sonoran Desert. The Sonoran Desert is full of amazing and wondrous sights, but nothing is more magnificent than these towering cacti. Taking 75 to 100 years before they start to grow arms, these giant icons have survived an incredibly long time in the harsh desert. They may grow slowly, but they can become very large—50 feet is not uncommon, and the largest ever recorded was 78 feet tall!

I wanted to capture a unique perspective of this plant, highlighting its individual beauty rather than presenting the classic image of it lost in a vast landscape. This square photo, taken just after the sun had risen over the mountains in Saguaro National Park, shows every bit of the saguaro’s amazing detail. When printed, you can see each razor-sharp spine, and the green color almost glows against the blue morning sky. Taken in spring, the small desert flowers are in full bloom, adding just a tiny bit of red to contrast the blue and green.
