Description
Bryce Canyon National Park, one of the “Utah 5,” is a stunning and unique park filled with crimson-colored hoodoos, massive fins, and deep canyons to explore. On a freezing winter morning, the day after a storm had cleared, I donned my crampons and, with all my camera gear, set out to hike down the switchbacks in the darkness. I had scouted this area the day before and knew exactly where I wanted to set up my camera.
I positioned my tripod and camera so the sun would peek out just to the left of Thor’s Hammer, a famous hoodoo also known as a fairy chimney. As luck would have it, just enough of the winter storm clouds remained to add an amazing sky to my scene. The combination of the glowing sun, dramatic clouds, and the unique rock formations made for a breathtaking photograph.
