Mount Baldy, a majestic sand dune within Indiana Dunes National Park, presents a unique challenge to photographers due to its limited viewpoints, often obstructed by various elements. Determined to capture something distinctive, I recognized an opportunity for creativity, as the dune’s shifting nature meant it was always changing.
I visited several times in the pre-dawn darkness, waiting for the perfect light. Positioning myself at the base of the steep dune, I aimed to convey its immense scale. Looking upwards, you can spot three trees partially engulfed by the sand, creating a surreal landscape. The sand cascades down in wave-like patterns towards where I stood.
The sunrise was breathtaking. The sky transitioned through hues of yellow, pink, and orange, providing a stunning contrast against the dark sand and the silhouettes of withered trees. This moment encapsulates the dynamic beauty of Mount Baldy in a way that is both rare and evocative.
