Description
The U.S. Virgin Islands are full of ruins from old sugar and rum plantations. While some are much larger, the view doesn’t get much better than from Peace Hill, part of the original Denis Bay Plantation. This photo captures a view from inside the sugar mill’s windmill, looking out at a stunning sunset with the British Virgin Islands visible in the distance.
The site has a rich history, from its beginnings as a plantation with the dark history of slavery to its purchase by Julius Wadsworth, a retired Lt. Col. of the U.S. Army and an advocate for world peace. Wadsworth donated the land to the National Park, but before doing so, he built the statue called “The Christ of the Caribbean.” The statue stood for years before it was felled by a hurricane in 1995.
