Description
When we traveled to Badlands National Park in early October, the weather was supposed to be mild. However, southern South Dakota can be wild and unpredictable. While we planned for mild to cool fall days, we were greeted with bitter cold, early snow, and an almost empty park. I’ll trade cold days for a lack of crowds any day. We had the park almost to ourselves as we explored.
Sunrise was always the coldest, with very high winds most days. We came down from the loop road and started to hike through the lower valley. In the distance, I could see the badlands with fresh snow from the night before. I waited for the first light to come down and illuminate the valley before taking this photo. The red sky with the warm light creates a wonderful, almost warm feeling, even though it was truly freezing.
