Description
Standing at the summit of the East Maui Volcano inside Haleakalā is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Though not physically challenging, obtaining this type of image still requires dedication. The drive to the crater can take a few hours, depending on your distance from the park entrance, and sunrise viewing requires a timed-entry ticket due to its popularity.
The afternoon before, I scouted the best possible location for sunrise and returned to this spot two hours before dawn the next morning. Arriving early is essential to capture this kind of scene. At over 10,000 feet, you’re often above the clouds, which was the case on this beautiful August morning. Watching the sun rise through the clouds and illuminate the cinder-cone volcanoes ahead is a truly remarkable adventure.
To secure the perfect photo, I visited several mornings in a row and felt incredibly fortunate to capture this stunning view!
