Description
I made this image in American Samoa from a higher vantage point overlooking the coast, which gave me a clear view of this small palm-topped sea stack just offshore. Right after sunset, as blue hour was beginning, the sky shifted into a beautiful mix of soft pastel color. The scene had a quieter, gentler feel than the more dramatic sunset images from the same evening, and I wanted to capture that mood.
The longer exposure helped smooth the water and simplify the scene, drawing more attention to the shape of the rock, the cluster of palm trees, and the subtle color in the sky. What I love most about this photograph is how strongly it feels tied to place. Between the isolated sea stack, the tropical palms, and the soft South Pacific light, it captures a peaceful moment that felt unmistakably like American Samoa.
