The Blue Forest Red Glow

The Blue Forest Trail, my favorite hiking route in Petrified Forest National Park, has a rich history. Originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934, the trail was closed in 1955 along with the lower road, replaced by the easier Blue Mesa Trail. In 2013, it was reopened for those seeking more adventurous treks through the badlands’ challenging terrain. The trail’s rugged hills and valleys offer breathtaking views that shift with every turn and crest.

During one evening hike on the Blue Forest Trail, I witnessed a magical transformation. As the sun set, the distant storm clouds turned a vivid shade of red, casting a warm glow over the Blue Badlands. The striking contrast between the blue hills and the red light created a surreal, captivating landscape that made the challenging hike well worth the effort.
