Description
Grand View Overlook is the highest point in the entire New River Gorge National Park. I visited several mornings in a row, searching for the perfect conditions. Standing at the edge of the cliff, the New River is over 1,400 feet below, offering a perfect view of the bend in the river. If you look closely, you can see an active railway and the town of Quinnimont, where the first coal was shipped out of the gorge in 1873.
On this morning, I had perfect conditions. I arrived so early it was hard to tell what was going on, but as the blue hour started and the sky gained some light, I found myself looking down at a perfect cloud inversion. I took photos throughout sunrise and came away with this powerful image. The clouds both above and below are alive with drama, and the early fall colors can be seen throughout the Appalachian Mountains.
