Description
Welcome to Kennecott, a historic relic of Alaska’s past. Once a thriving industrial hub, this town features a massive mill and mining complex that offers a captivating look into a bygone era. Home to the world’s largest freestanding wooden structure and one of the most productive copper mines in history, Kennecott is now preserved by the National Park Service, allowing visitors to explore its fascinating legacy.
On a cool, rainy August afternoon, my visit to Kennecott was unforgettable. I toured the colossal ore processing building, marveling at its enormous size as I climbed to the top and worked my way down. Halfway through, I captured a unique perspective through an open window. The vibrant red ore chute contrasted strikingly with the dark gray skies, creating a stunning visual. Below, the town of Kennecott and the valley lay where a glacier once stood during the plant’s heyday. The rain accentuated the vivid reds and greens, making for an incredibly captivating scene.
