Description
Explore the captivating town of Kennecott, a remarkable testament to Alaska’s rich history. This iconic town, with its mill and mines, stands as an extraordinary relic from the past. Once home to the world’s largest free-standing wooden structure, Kennecott was among the most prolific copper mines in human history. Preserved and safeguarded by the National Park Service (NPS), Kennecott remains remarkably intact, mirroring its appearance from 1920 when it was a hub of high-grade copper ore production. Today, you can embark on guided tours to witness these incredible structures.
During my visit on a chilly and rainy August afternoon, I toured the colossal ore processing building. Its sheer size is awe-inspiring. The journey to the summit allows you to venture inside and navigate your way downward. It was towards the upper section where I stumbled upon an enchanting discovery—an old window. The faint light streaming through it illuminated the weathered, century-old wooden frame, casting it in a warm glow. Outside, the valley below was shrouded in clouds and rain, creating a captivating scene.
