Our first morning at Voyageurs National Park began before dawn. With headlamps cutting through the darkness, we made our way out to the edge of the breakwater on Kabetogama Lake to wait for sunrise. I had little idea of what to expect just the quiet sound of water and the faint outline of trees against the sky.
As the light slowly grew, the entire horizon caught fire. The red and orange tones deepened with every minute, casting a warm glow across the lake. At first, the scene felt too open, too broad to capture beautiful but without a focal point. Then I spotted a small cabin nestled among the pines along the far shore. Switching to a longer lens, I framed tight on that cabin and the trees as the fiery sky reflected on the water.
It turned a wide, undefined landscape into something more intimate a glimpse of solitude and warmth against the vastness of the northern wilderness. It was a quiet, rewarding start to our time in Voyageurs.
