Description
Devils Tower is an impressive formation found in the northeast corner of Wyoming. It’s an incredibly famous butte composed of igneous rock, and to this day, the exact details of its formation remain a mystery. Known by many names, most notably Bear Lodge Butte, this location has long been sacred to many Native Americans. In modern history, President Theodore Roosevelt designated it as the first National Monument in 1906.
It’s a truly impressive formation, and creating an interesting image here can be quite the challenge. This day was full of afternoon thunderstorms, with rain, lightning, and even hail. I waited in the parking lot, hoping for a pause long enough to get this photo. A few hours before sunset, I hiked up to the boulder field and found this composition. With the last sunlight of the day hitting the face of the tower and the clouds breaking apart, I was able to capture this amazing image.
