Description
The Olympic Peninsula is perhaps one of the most diverse locations in any of our National Parks. You can go from snow-capped mountains to deep rain forests, down to some of the most stunning coastline anywhere in the world—all in the same park! On this cold November evening, I headed down to the Kalaloch and Ruby beaches, maybe the most popular of the 100-plus miles of coastline. Known for its many sea stacks and sheer beauty, it did not disappoint.
This photograph recreates the remarkable sunset I had the good fortune to witness. I found this small but interesting sea stack and aligned my camera so the sun would be directly behind it as it set. This photo brings together different moments in one piece—from the clouds full of color to the soft, blurred waves, and the late light on the foreground rocks after the sun dipped behind the horizon. What really sets this apart is the glow from behind the sea stack from the last light of the sun, wrapping its warm light all the way around the rock, allowing it to come to life.
