This image was created during our second family trip to Yosemite National Park. We spent the evening climbing across the granite and exploring the landscape around Olmsted Point while waiting for the final light of the day. Smoke from wildfires burning elsewhere in California had settled across the Sierra Nevada, softening the distant landscape and transforming the sunset into something almost surreal.
As the sun dropped toward the horizon, warm golden light swept across the exposed granite, illuminating Half Dome and the surrounding ridgelines while deep shadows gathered throughout Tenaya Canyon. The contrast between the glowing rock, dark forest, and layered haze revealed the immense scale of Yosemite’s high country. Rather than isolating Half Dome, this composition places it within the larger landscape of granite domes, steep valleys, scattered trees, and distant mountain layers.
Created as a sweeping panorama of nearly 300 megapixels, Golden Hour from Olmsted Point preserves an extraordinary amount of detail across the scene. The panoramic format follows the natural movement of the land, beginning with the illuminated granite slopes on the left and carrying the viewer through the canyon toward Half Dome in the distance. Even the small trees clinging to the rock help communicate the overwhelming size of the surrounding formations.
The wildfire smoke was an unfortunate part of that summer in California, but for a brief moment it filtered the evening light into muted shades of gold, peach, and rose. The result is a quieter and more atmospheric interpretation of Yosemite—one that captures not only the familiar landmarks, but also the feeling of standing high above the landscape as the last light moved across the granite.
