Description

Gateway Arch National Park is the smallest National Park in the United States and, dare I say, very different from the rest. Sitting on the banks of the Mississippi River, in the middle of Saint Louis, this tiny 91-acre park is not what most people imagine when they hear “National Park.”

As a landscape photographer on a quest to photograph every one of our National Parks, it was a real struggle to find a way to capture this 630ft tall steel structure. While there are other well-known structures within the park, such as the Old Courthouse, I wanted to focus on creating an interesting image of just the arch without the distraction of the city or other structures.

I visited the park in winter when the weather called for snow and rain. I went out each morning before dawn and each afternoon at sunset until I had the perfect conditions. This photo was taken during the blue hour after a night of snow and freezing rain. The storm clouds turned a warm blue and red, and the stainless-steel arch was covered in ice, creating an unusual and captivating photograph.
