Standing on the edge of East Maui Volcano inside Haleakalā National Park, it’s challenging to capture the awe-inspiring wonder of this sacred site, revered by native peoples for thousands of years. As I awaited the sunrise above the cloud inversion, I focused my lens on a small area at the far left of the crater, aiming to showcase the contrast between the soft clouds and the warm, pre-dawn light against the sharp, jagged rocks of the volcano.
Arriving the afternoon before, I scouted the area for the optimal sunrise location. The next morning, I found myself in this spot nearly two hours before sunrise—a testament to the necessity of arriving early for such an image. At over 10,000 feet, most mornings offer a surreal experience above the clouds, as was the case on this August morning. Witnessing the sun rise through the clouds to illuminate the cinder-cone volcano before me was truly an unforgettable adventure.
I returned multiple mornings in anticipation of capturing the perfect shot, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have captured something this remarkable.
