Description
Over two trips to Maui, I’ve now had the privilege of witnessing four sunrises atop Haleakalā. Each time has been different, shaped by weather, light, and the choice of viewpoint. On my first visit, I stayed near the visitor center to experience the iconic wide vista. Later that same trip, I hiked to an overlook along the rim for a quieter perspective.
On this most recent morning, I set out before dawn, hiking up from the visitor center to explore a new vantage point. While it didn’t offer the best sweeping “grand view” of the entire crater, it revealed opportunities for more intimate telephoto work. This frame was taken just after sunrise, as clouds surged up to fill the crater floor. The first light of day kissed the cloud tops, turning them golden, while the volcanic rock below shifted into warm hues of red and orange.
The result is less about vastness and more about detail a study in light, texture, and atmosphere. It captures the way Haleakalā seems to breathe at sunrise, as earth, cloud, and sky come together in a fleeting balance.
