Description
This photograph was made in the area along Route 009 in American Samoa, where I had been searching for a west-facing view for sunset. After driving for hours with very little information to work from, I found this overlook above the coast, with waves coming into the beach below, rocks in the foreground, and a small sea stack with a palm tree in the distance.
Unlike the wider time-blended version from this evening, this image is a closer view and not a time blend. The scene was bracketed because of the extreme difference between the bright sun near the horizon and the darker water and coastline below. The sun was just about to touch the ocean, and the clouds above it were alive with warm color.
What I love about this frame is how direct it feels. The wave line leads the eye straight into the setting sun, while the glowing clouds and distant shoreline hold the scene together. It captures a quieter, more focused moment from an incredible sunset along the South Pacific coast.
