Description
I arrived at the summit of Haleakalā long before sunrise, bundled against the wind and the surprising cold that comes with standing at 10,000 feet in Hawaii. After hiking out to secure a good vantage point, I set up for a massive multi-row panorama, knowing this location called for scale and detail. As dawn broke, the peak of blue hour filled the sky with color while clouds rolled into the crater below. The sun had risen above the horizon but remained hidden under the cloud layer, creating soft, indirect light that highlighted the red, orange, and ochre tones of the volcanic slopes. Exposure bracketing allowed me to balance the deep shadows and bright sky, preserving the glow of the cinder cones and the delicate hues in the atmosphere. This image reflects the drama, immensity, and fragile beauty of Haleakalā’s volcanic landscape, a place where sunrise feels otherworldly.
