Description

Crater Lake, nestled in a massive 2,148-foot-deep caldera, is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, formed solely from melting snow. Most visitors steer clear of this park during the winter, and for good reason—an average winter brings over 463 inches of snowfall, or more than 36 feet of snow. However, the unparalleled beauty that winter brings is well worth the challenge.

We chose to spend a few days here in winter and snowshoed around the edge of the crater. On this cold winter evening, I captured this photo. The wind-driven snow had erased any traces of human presence. What appears to be a small tree in the foreground is actually the top of a towering 40-foot evergreen, catching the last rays of sunlight. The nearly frozen, pure blue water remains still, while the sky transitions from a soft yellow to a deep blue and purple hue.

Winter at Crater Lake National Park with snow-covered crater, warm pink and red sunset sky, and deep blue water.
