Description
On this freezing cold morning with wind and snow, my daughter and I watched the sunrise from Panorama Point in Badlands National Park. The weather should have been much warmer as it was early October, but a surprise snowstorm and cold air brought a feeling of frigid winter to the landscape. With flat winter clouds, it was hard to get the ‘classic’ style of photos you often see from the Badlands. This forced me to be creative and turn my camera away from the obvious direction towards the mountains and rising sun.
I was lucky that even with the storm clouds, the sun found a way to break free and shine some light on the scene in front of me. The layers of snow, rock, and grass create a multi-layer dimension to this landscape. The colorful clouds and warm yellows of the sun perfectly balance the dark foreground.
