Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a very special place to me and my family. It’s truly a wonderful and stunning park that sees very few visitors each year. The below photo was taken at Oxbow Bend in the Northern Unit of the park, an area even less visited than the Southern Unit. It’s truly a place to be alone and enjoy this magnificent landscape.
This was my second trip to the park, in early summer, and it had stormed all day. There was thunder, lightning, and rain for most of the afternoon. As sunset approached, the rain let up and we hiked down to find this viewpoint. The soft clay had become incredibly slippery, making walking a bit challenging as we tried not to go over the edge. As sunset approached, the clouds broke up enough to allow the colors to form, and I was able to create this special image. The clouds reflected the colors down into the Little Missouri River as it winds its way through the badlands.
