Description

Before the Ancestral Puebloans built the iconic cliff dwellings, it’s believed they lived atop the Mesa. Whether due to security concerns or resource scarcity, around 1190 AD they began to inhabit the cliff sides. Exploring the Mesa’s summit reveals fascinating forests and ancient ruins.

Between 1989 and 2003, a series of wildland fires swept through the park, burning over half its total acreage. As I followed a game trail into the forest at sunset, I witnessed a sky full of vibrant colors. This scene, though not the typical image from the park, captures a significant aspect of its history. Fire has long been a natural part of life here, and the forest will eventually regenerate.

The photo was taken deep in a forest severely damaged by fire many years ago. The vivid hues of the evening sky contrasted with the charred remains of trees and the new growth sprouting on the forest floor. This image reminds us that while fire can be destructive, it also fosters renewal and the cycle of life continues.
