Description
In late December 2019, I had the opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon. We arrived just as a winter storm blew in. I knew that if the storm broke, I might capture a truly amazing photo. Many things need to align for a shot like this—the storm must break right around sunrise or sunset, the sky must be interesting, and you have to find the right subject. Everything on this trip lined up perfectly for me.
We hiked in the dark with headlamps to find this location. The stars aligned that morning, and after standing in the freezing cold for hours, I was rewarded with this once-in-a-lifetime photo. The storm clouds breaking, the vibrant colors of the sunrise, and the majestic landscape of the Grand Canyon all came together to create a breathtaking scene.
