Description
I made this image after spending several hours driving along Route 009 in American Samoa, searching for the right overlook for sunset. There is not much detailed information available for photo locations there, so a lot of the day was simply exploring the road, watching the coastline, and looking for places where the mountains, beaches, and west-facing views might come together. Eventually, I found this spot where the road dropped toward a valley, with a beach below, rocks in the foreground, and a small sea stack with a lone palm tree in the distance.
The sunset that evening was a gift. The sky exploded with color, the clouds caught the warm light, and the ocean reflected the orange and gold tones across the moving water. I knew while standing there that this was one of those moments where the camera could only get part of the way ther
e the rest would come from carefully building the final image to match what the scene felt like in person.
This photograph is a time blend, using several of the strongest moments from the same sunset. I blended the sky, land, and water together to recreate the feeling of that evening as faithfully as I could: the glowing clouds overhead, the waves rolling into shore, and the wild coastline of American Samoa lit by one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen.
