Description
This image was created at the peak of sunset during our evening at Secret Beach on my son Collin’s birthday. After hiking down and walking the shoreline to find the right spot, the sky suddenly broke open as the sun dropped toward the horizon. The storm clouds lit up in fiery golds and oranges, while the wet sand became a mirror, reflecting the color and contrast of the sky.
The photograph is a careful time blend of several frames taken within minutes of one another one short exposure to keep the trees along the shoreline sharp, another to capture the waves retreating from the sand with full color, and others to balance the clouds above. The result is an image that feels quintessentially Hawaiian: palm trees, surf, and a glowing sky coming together in one fleeting, radiant moment.
Secret Beach (Kauapea Beach) is one of Kauai’s most dramatic stretches of coastline, where weather and light change quickly. On this evening, the shifting storm and the final burst of light combined to create a sunset that captured both the beauty and the unpredictability of the islands.
