Description
On our first night on Kauai, I had planned to photograph sunset at the Makawehi Bluffs. I scouted the area, hiked around, and tried to find the right vantage point, but nothing resonated. As the light began to fade, I felt like the evening might slip away without an image. On the walk back, we crossed Shipwreck Beach, and that’s when I saw it the shoreline covered in black pebbles, with a handful of bright yellow stones scattered among them.
This photograph was taken in the blue hour, just after sunset. The waves were breaking far offshore, but with a long exposure, the water smoothed into a soft wash of color, creating a striking contrast with the texture of the rocky foreground. Above the horizon, the sky held onto its fading warmth, painted in delicate gradients of peach and blue.
The combination of stillness and motion, texture and color, made the scene unexpectedly compelling. What began as a rushed, uncertain evening ended in calm and clarity, captured in this fine art coastal image of Shipwreck Beach.
