Description
This photograph was taken at sunset along the rugged Lipoa Ridge coastline on Maui. Unlike many of the island’s more iconic views, this side of Maui does not always offer a clear path to the setting sun, as other islands often block the horizon depending on the time of year. On this particular evening, the color in the sky was subdued, but a massive rain cloud drifted into the frame and transformed the mood of the scene. Moments after this capture, rain began falling, completing the transition from evening calm to tropical storm. The long exposure softened the water slightly while keeping detail in the rocks, creating a balance of movement and texture. Converting the image to black and white allowed the interplay of tones the bright water, the layered clouds, and the shifting shades of the rocky coastline to take center stage, emphasizing the drama and mood of the moment.
