Description
The Financial District neighborhood of Boston has many distinct buildings, but none more well-known than the Custom House. First built in 1849, with a tower added in 1915, it is a true Boston landmark. A fun fact: when the Custom House was first constructed, it touched the water’s edge. Ships moored at Long Wharf almost touched the eastern face of the building, making it easy for the government to collect maritime duties from the clipper ships.
This stunning photo was taken in early spring on a cool evening, with clouds blowing quickly across the city. The marvelous Custom House, with its four clock faces, lights up just as the sun sets. The sky turned a wonderful soft yellow, framing the rest of downtown Boston. The State Street Bank building and other prominent structures can also be seen. On this evening, the streets were empty, creating a unique and tranquil feel to this work.
