Description
It was an early spring evening, and it had been storming throughout the day. I waited for sunset on the Skyline Walk, between the Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium. This image captures most of Chicago’s famous buildings. You can see the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), the second tallest building in the United States. The Aon Center, formerly the Standard Oil Building, changed its name after the company rebranded. The building itself had to undergo its own transformation when its marble facade was replaced with granite due to the Windy City’s gusts knocking the marble loose and creating a fall hazard. The historic Palmer House, now a Hilton Hotel, can be seen to the right of the Shedd Aquarium. The John Hancock Center, the seventh tallest building in the US, is visible on the right-hand side of the image.
These buildings, lit up for the night, create an eye-catching image against the backdrop of a sunset just after an early spring storm. You can see the storm clouds and building lights reflected in the wrap-around windows of the Shedd Aquarium in the left-hand corner of the photo and the still wet pavement of the Lakefront Trail.
I was incredibly lucky that just before sunset, the rain stopped. The lake was very choppy with large waves coming up well onto the boardwalk. This is a composite photograph, several photos taken throughout the evening blended together. Just enough of the clouds parted to allow the sun to light up the sky while creating a warm reflection on the cold concrete right in front of me. The longer exposures of the later photos smoothed out the water. Since this was taken throughout the entire sunset, the skyline transitions from light to dark, giving it a special effect.
