I found this location on Google Maps while looking for a strong sunrise view of Honolulu and Waikiki. The spot was Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park, looking back across the harbor toward the city skyline. We had a flight to American Samoa later that day, but with a free morning available, we took an Uber over before dawn and walked out into the park in the dark. I was surprised by how many people were already out jogging and walking, and even more surprised by the number of feral cats wandering around the park before sunrise.
This image was made at the height of sunrise as the warm light started to spread across the city. Unlike the earlier image from this morning, this one is not a time blend. It is a multi-row panoramic photograph, built from several overlapping frames to capture the full sweep of Waikiki, from the darker clouds and city towers on the left to the golden sunrise glow on the right. The wide format gives the scene room to breathe and helps show the scale of the skyline against the harbor.
One of the small gifts in this photograph is the rowing crew passing through the foreground. They add a quiet human element to the scene without overwhelming it. Between the early light in the buildings, the soft reflections on the water, the clouds over the mountains, and the rowers moving across the frame, this image captures the feeling of Honolulu waking up at sunrise.
