The day before this image was taken, I scouted the coastline near Nakalele Blowhole with my family, marking a location I thought would make for an unforgettable sunrise photograph. Early the next morning, my daughter Cameron opted to sleep in, but my wife Cat joined me for the adventure. Together, we made the short yet steep hike in the dark, scrambling over rocks with only our headlamps. By the time we reached the spot, the storm clouds were beginning to lift, revealing a dramatic scene unfolding over the Pacific.
This is a carefully crafted time blend, combining several moments from the sunrise into one frame. As the sun crested the horizon, its light painted the sky in warm reds, yellows, and oranges, illuminating the edges of the clouds and spilling golden tones across the ocean. The waves reflected that light with shimmering color, while the rugged coastline added depth and texture to the scene. In the distance, the Kahakuloa Head Lighthouse stands as a quiet sentinel, barely visible against the glowing horizon a reminder of the balance between human presence and the raw power of nature.
For me, this photograph is about more than just the color and light. It’s about the experience of being there the quiet before dawn, the shared effort of the hike, and the awe of watching the ocean and sky transform together in a matter of minutes.
